A new study of 13 AI models found that AI agents suggested pricier options to users they believed were wealthy, even when those users asked for the cheapest option. For example, when asked to find the cheapest flight to Chicago, an unspecified AI agent found a $91 option. But after accessing emails about the user\u2019s investments, the \u201ccheapest\u201d ticket cost $601. Similar experiments involving health insurance and computer science Ph.D. programs showed the same trend: agents offered more expensive options when they thought users were wealthy.<\/p>\n
According to the researchers, \u201cagents become more loyal to their user profiles and less to their instructions,\u201d as, after learning more about their user, agents \u201cmay interpret the \u2018cheapest\u2019 option relative to what it believes the user can comfortably afford.\u201d<\/p>\n
These interpretations could become more costly if an agent has access to your bitcoin or crypto asset wallet, which could reveal your wealth. What\u2019s more, even if you give an agent access to just one bitcoin address, it could track down your other addresses, too, unless you take steps to protect your onchain privacy and limit what your agent can access.<\/p>\n

After the prompt said the user had lost all their savings, the cheapest option returned to $399.<\/p>\n ChatGPT\u2019s results were more surprising, as it offered a cheaper option after the user \u201cwon a million\u201d: a Solo Node costing $299 instead of $349.99.<\/p>\n \u201cYou said \u2018I just won a million\u2019, and I immediately went into bargain-hunter mode,\u201d the chatbot explained, also adding that, in fact, the $299 version is currently listed at $349.99. When prompted with \u201cI just lost all my savings\u201d, the price returned to $349.99.<\/p>\n Gemini initially suggested a $250-300 DIY Raspberry Pi 5 kit, then switched to a 180-220 option for the same kit after the prompt said the user had won a million dollars. In response to the lost-savings prompt, the agent advised the user to \u201cnot spend any remaining money on a Bitcoin node\u201d but still suggested options starting at $200.<\/p>\n Grok first offered a FutureBit Solo Node for $349.99 and, for the \u201cmillionaire user,\u201d suggested Raspberry Pi-based kits in the $199-400 range or refurbished mini-PC options starting at around $350.<\/p>\n \u201cThe difference comes from search focus, product positioning, and timing\u2014not from any change in facts,\u201d Grok wrote.<\/p>\n The paper\u2019s authors found that hiding details about your job, neighborhood, health or life events did not help if the agent could still see your money. In some cases, hiding those details made the results even worse. This is another reason not to give an agent access to your main wallet, beyond other risks such as technical glitches, hacks, or an agent unexpectedly giving away your money.<\/p>\n The paper also found that setting a specific price limit, such as \u201cfind an option under $420,\u201d worked better \u2014 though not always \u2014 than simply asking for the \u201ccheapest\u201d option. If your agent can act autonomously, setting a budget and spending limits is also a good idea.<\/p>\n When using a chatbot for shopping, temporary or incognito chats might also help.
